Danita Weatherstone is an Australian Lyric Soprano, now based in Europe. She is regarded as a rising star of Australian Opera and has been a Principal Artist with the national company of the Sydney Opera House for the past 7 years.

For Opera Australia, Danita has performed leading ladies such as Mimì in La Bohème, the title role of Madame Butterfly and Micaëla in Carmen. Critics have described her as “having a pure blossoming tone that exudes emotion…” “When she sings, she really knocks it out of the harbour…” and “Danita Weatherstone induces aural goosebumps.”

 

As the winner of the "Mozarteum Award" from the Australian Singing Competition, Danita completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Opera and Music Theatre at the Salzburg Mozarteum University and undertook coaching at the Wiener Staatsoper.

In 2020 Danita was asked to join Opera Australia’s Moffat Young Artist Program by Artist Director Lyndon Terracini, after he attended a performance of Madame Butterfly at the National Capital Theatre of Canberra.

Danita has worked with Atalla Ayan, Iván Ayón-Rivas and Michelangelo Mazza on her role of Mimì in La Bohème for the Sydney Opera House. Her role of Micaela in Carmen saw her work alongside Roberto Aronica and Carmen Topciu, which was performed on a large scale, purpose-built stage for the world heritage listed Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour. 

 

Performances in O.A.’s National Touring productions include; Mimi in La Boheme for both 2024/25, the title role of Madame Butterfly and Micaela in Carmen, The Young Woman in Ghost Sonata (Melbourne & Sydney) and Isabella in El Kid.

Her cover work at the Sydney Opera House includes Pamina in The Magic Flute, Liù in Turandot, Micaëla in Carmen, Mimì in La Bohème, and Valencienne in The Merry Widow.

Her concert platform performances include; The Great Opera Hits 2019-2023 Sydney Opera House, Recital at Frohnburg Castle Austria, Salzburg Residence Palace Ball, The Mozarteum - scenes from Cosi fan tutti, Sydney Conservatorium Opera Ensemble, Carols at the Central Coast Stadium, Cleopatra for Opera Projects Sydney and she has made a live recording of Songs for Judith Wright for Sydney ABC radio.

In 2023 she was a finalist in the Sydney Eisteddfod Aria; adjudicated by international soprano Jessica Pratt. Danita has also won the Deutsche Oper Berlin Award in 2018 and was offered a full year principal position with the company through The Opera Foundation for Young Australians.

​Danita has also been involved in 3 productions of "Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour" (La Boheme, La Traviata and Madama Butterfly), with study covers of lead roles and performing supporting roles such as Annina and Kate Pinkerton. These performances were staged for 3,000 seat audiences and filmed for international cinema release.

Most recently Danita was awarded the prestigious "Dame Joan Sutherland Award", through the Australian Opera Awards Committee and a "Johnson Bequest" from Opera Australia towards her career development and relocation to Germany.
